Salah TS#4

12/3/15 (4-5pm)
Leroy Collins Public Library

Yeoung’s parents told me they were taking her on a vacation to New York next week and that they would visit Niagara falls.  I thought it would be a good opportunity to do activities around the theme of water, rain (weather), waterfalls and geography + pronunciation of Niagara falls & New York.
I arrived at the library a bit early, so I could pick out a few books from the youth services section.  These books had text and pictures on the subject.  I asked her to read these out wherever possible.  Some explained weather patterns and rain/clouds while  others described temperature concepts(ex: cold water becomes ice, hot water becomes steam).

I was impressed at how much Yeong understood of these concepts already and told her she was very smart.
We talked about water in the seas and oceans and the animal life that lives there, whilst looking at pictures in various books.   I drew a quick sketch of the United States and showed Yeoung roughly where Florida and New York were located.   Finally, Yeong read out from one of her favorite books about Fairies.

I learned to apply intrinsic motivation to learning, as my tutee will have real life experiences around with what she has recently learned.
