11/3/15 (9-9:50am)
I observed Ms. Sana's group 2 grammar class.
The topic was 'modals' and how to recognize/use them effectively in sentences.
Miss Sana started by giving examples of modals ie: should have to, must, could, might etc. Then she gave a definition: Modals are helping verbs that help the main verb in a sentence.
Miss Sana manages the classroom by calling on a particular student if it seems that their concentration is drifting (ie: keeping them involved and interested).
She used the whiteboard and also provided two handouts. These had fill in the blank sentences and other activities that used modal verbs. Students worked in pairs each taking a role of asking or answering questions.
If she asks a student a question and they don't know the answer she would say 'it's okay, I'll let you think about it'. I thought this was a good example of positive student participation, as it takes the pressure off them and they won't look bad in front of their classmates, if they don't know the answer.
Sometimes their other classmates would help another student out and then the first one would understand. Miss Sana would give feedback by saying 'Great' and 'Good job'. I also liked how she pronounced all of the students names well (including mine!)
I learned that effective classroom management means working as a team ie: people help each other out and the teacher is the head of this team.
