Helena TS #2
My second tutoring session, which was really my first tutoring session that wasn't an observation, went pretty well if I must say so myself. I was definitely nervous to tutor P.J. for the first time. Would I be boring? Would I touch on relevant issues? Would I really help him improve his reading comprehension skills? I arranged two interesting and slightly funny videos to show him before we read each individual story. Then, we went along to reading. I observed during my last tutoring session that P.J. had a little trouble with retaining the information that he read. He is an excellent reader, but truly grasping the content of the story is difficult even for advanced readers to do at all times! I thought that this was a skill that he should definitely begin to master. So, with that in mind while P.J. read the story aloud, I stopped every 10-15 lines or so for us to discuss what those 10-15 lines had contained. This way, P.J. would have to truly engage with every part of the story, and would subsequently truly engage with the story as a whole at the end. This I found to be pretty effective, for we repeatedly discussed the major theme of the story and its morals. I am a huge advocate of repetition as a learning method, but only when done in exciting and engaging ways!

I like the idea of using videos. I hadn't thought of that.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's true. I did the same for reading exercise with my CIES tutee. hehe...she was really good at grasping the essence of the passage, because sometimes i was so concentrated on her pronunciation that didn't notice that she finished a passage. But she was stopping sharing the main idea of the passage.
ReplyDeleteI agree you need to keep it interesting, and he retains things much easier when it is
