Starbucks (W.Tennessee St.)
I tutored Mohammad Alrashidi. He is a Kuwaiti student who told me he needs to work on: spelling, new vocabulary and writing essays. He also wants help to prepare for his IELTs exam.
I started by having him look at a picture from one of his class textbooks. Then I asked him to write 5 sentences that described the scene in each picture. We then repeated this exercise again with a different picture.
I corrected mistakes, focusing on spelling. His composition was quite good.
As we met outside Starbucks, we could switch to verbal descriptions of traffic lights, motorcycles etc. and I also asked him about his life back in Kuwait , when he was getting tired of working on vocab or spelling. So I learned that having an interesting location can be useful.
I also spent some time talking about the roots of the English language ie: explaining that words came into English from French, Greek, Latin, Spanish, Arabic etc. I also defined the word ‘pattern’ and we talked about how it is useful (while learning English) to see certain patterns. For example the suffix ‘ology’ from Greek means ‘the study of’.
