Yeong told me she was born in April, so I wanted to test her knowledge of the months of the year. I was surprised that she knew all of them including their order and was able to spell them each on paper.
I tested her by asking 'if it is February, how many months till May?' etc. After counting on her fingers, she was able to answer each question correctly. I also tested her knowledge of 'the next year and next January' type questions. She struggled a bit at first, but then understood the concept.
To change pace, we went through a kid's book about colors (from the library). She knew all of the colors, listing light blue vs dark blue and even ones like indigo etc.
Next I asked her about days of the week in the same way that I had for months of the year. She knew how to spell each day and knew their order as well.
Next we worked on basic math skills ie: counting up and counting down, as well as fill in the blanks. Yeoung told me her father was already teaching her to tell time, so I tested her basic knowledge on the subject.
I told Yeong I was very impressed by how smart she was.
I learned that teaching counting can be done effectively together with vocabulary of days of the week/months of the year.
