During last session, student said that she would like to
read articles about nutrition because that will be her future major in
university. Thus, she would like to expand her vocabulary in this field. We
read article from New York Times. I explained some phrases and new vocabulary
like “bold, exceeding, intervention, disorder”. We worked on pronunciation when
she had difficulty. I noticed that she has difficulty reading long words like “intervention”,
and words with ending like –ture, -ous, -tion. She also occasionally misread or
skipped words, or forget to read the endings of plural form –s. We finished only part of the article as I noticed
that student started to lose interest. Therefore, I asked her what she learnt
from what she read. Then I asked how it was during her bachelor degree. What
did she study to become nutritionist? She talked about theoretical and
practical courses. We briefly went over passive and active voice. This question
came up from the sentence in the article. She could not understand is it was
past or present as sentence featured Subject+is+Ved. So, I explained her. Then,
she asked if just chancing from passive to active would be enough for paraphrasing.
Then, I explained what I knew about paraphrasing and emphasized that it is not enough
to change grammatical structure.
