Salah (Child) TS # 7:
Date/Time: 1/4/15 17:50-18:50
Location: Leroy Collins Public Library
Topic/Skill: focused on teaching concepts of American culture through reading and discussion
I try to do a bit of reading with Young each week. She
usually reads one page (typed text) from the Cinderella story and then I give
her a star at the top of the page. We pause along the way, examining words
she has difficulty with. This time, I noticed she had some trouble pronouncing 'th' words and also new
vocab, such as 'aside' and 'measured'. Still very impressive for a 5 year
old, though.
Young told me her birthday was coming up and she was very proud
that she would be 6 years old. I decided that segued nicely into a
discussion about American culture and the 4th or July celebrations.
I introduced new vocab words like: fireworks, picnic, parades,
flags, freedom etc. and used visual aids - library books to assist me (I found
these in the children's section of the library, before the session began).
This led to a discussion of American presidents, figures on
American money, cowboys & cowgirls (and clothing ex: hats, boots etc).
Lastly, we worked on pronunciation of regular verbs in the past
tense ex: talked, walked, shouted, raced, observed etc. and touched briefly on
contractions ex: couldn’t, wouldn’t, aren’t etc.
