Today, our conversation began with what kind of day DJ had today. We proceeded to my plans for the day. I mentioned my host country project on China. DJ then explained a somewhat sensitive topic I have not heard anyone discuss in detail yet. The shared desire of China and South Korea for Japanese government admission and apology for Japanese aggression and colonization prior to World War II. This led to other news topics including Islamic State and the response in South Korea to a young Korean joining Islamic State. DJ proficiently switches tenses when explaining his viewpoints. He is very talkative and sometimes struggles with vocabulary though he has an excellent vocabulary. For this reason, DJ and I agreed to share a video or article ahead of time for future conversation sessions.

Today was my final tutoring session with my Colombian tutee. It has been a great experience for me getting to know these international students, assessing the levels they are one, and teaching them. I think these particular students were good because they are active, interested CIES students. I don't imagine all of my students when teaching in Asia will be this easy to work with, but I can hope! In this session we reviewed everything we had talked about during the previous tutoring sessions, reviewed future plans, and ate a nice meal. It was great seeing her remember all of the things we had talked about and learned in previous lessons.

One of my conversation partners messaged me asking for help with a speaking presentation. Mutaz had told me that he needed the most help in organizing what he was going to say during his powerpoint presentation. When I asked him to interpret the graphs he had given me, he had a difficult time explaining in English what the results were. I explained to him what a survey was and how you should present the information as in "1 out of 5 students stated they did not like FSU". After I wrote it out, I would ask him to speak it to me and make sure his pronunciation was correct. He asked me to go to dinner with him tomorrow night to continue conversation practice.

For this meeting with Matthew and David, Mrs. Hong requested that I work on reading with them. As stated before, the boys (especially David) do not enjoy reading . They try to rush through their reading as if it were a race. I have to remind both boys to SLOW DOWN and enjoy what they are reading. David often can read a whole chapter without ever being able to identify the most important information. The biggest struggle for me is getting David to not throw a fit while also finding a way for him to slow down his reading so he can truly comprehend it. I tell him to read a page, then I read the following page at a natural rate. Then, I follow up with comprehension questions to make sure he truly attained the information that was needed.

For my second to last session with my child tutee, we had a familiar pace to the lesson. There was a short book of material and he needed to understand the concepts and vocabulary from the whole book. The book today happened to be about reptile with extreme abilities, so I got him interested with a cool video of a boa constrictor fighting with a crocodile. After this, he was interested, so we just went back and forth through the book and the vocabulary until he had it all down pat. By the end of the lesson he was asking to watch the snake video again, so I must have picked the right one!

Zoe's home
Since this was my last session with Zoe, we decided to play a few word games. I used a word search game for new vocabulary comprehension. We also played charades were I acted out certain animals and she had to guess the name. We also worked on her homework which included a matching activity for vocabulary and short answer questions. We also completed a math assignment that included learning to take measurements. We were both sad when the session came to a close. I thanked her for being such a good student and we took a picture together to keep as a souvenir.

The workshop activity on this session was to create a script. I had the privilege to work with CiCi a Chinese student. We discussed what is considered to be polite behavior in her culture. She advised me that in Chinese culture if you offered a gift or food it should always be refused at the initial offering. She advised me that only after various offering should the gift be accepted. I found that to be an interesting custom since it is quite the opposite of the American gift giving custom. We decided to use this conflict in our script to be presented at the next IC Workshop activity. Our setting will be CiCi offering to buy me coffee at Starbucks and I will respond in the American custom and we will work through the conflict by making a compromise.
