Today I met
my first conversation partner, Ali. Ali is from Libya. He is 19 years old, and
has been in America for seven months. His first language is Libyan, which he
said is a combination of Arabic and Italian. He said he had studied English in
his country but wasn’t too successful so he decided to come to America and
immerse himself in the language. He did not seem to have a lot of problems with
vocabulary, there was only two or three times that he did not know what word to
use. I helped him with the words he had difficulty and also taught him a couple
of new ones. Ali told me that he mostly wanted to work on his speaking, because
it is the most important skill for him. I agree, since he also has some problem
with pronunciation. We talked for a while about his country, his family and
goals for the future. Ali said he would like to invent a car that flies and
runs on solar power. I told him that everything is possible if you set your mind
to do it. He also said he loves Tallahassee because it reminds him of his
hometown. Overall, I enjoyed conversing with Ali and I am looking forward to meet
with him again next week and go over some of the things he said he was having
trouble with.
