My first meeting with my conversation partner Juliam was very interesting.  Juliam is from Columbia and this is her first semester at FSU.  Juliam misses her family very much particularly her mother and her 12 year old daughter.  The reason she is studying English is that she wants to enter the Master's program here at FSU.  We talked about the things she misses from Columbia like the different types of food and music there.  I discovered while speaking with her, that a big move or change in locations can affect you emotionally and it may have a negative  impact your ability to learn.  This has made me aware that when I move to Spain to teach to expect a time for readjustment.  Also, as a teacher we should realize that a student that feels homesick may be slower in learning a new language because they may have more trouble concentrating.
