2B class
Composition
Teacher started from explaining agenda. Then teacher gave
back journal #1 with the feedback. She explained that in the class she wants
them to write as much as possible. Also, she said “don’t worry about grammar
and spelling mistakes”. For journal #2 they had to write at least more than
what they did in journal #2. Some of them did some of them didn’t. really
distracting for the teacher and others were some student who were not paying
attention. Teacher had hard time working with them. She was very polite and
asked the student to take a paper and start writing. However, some of them didn’t
listen to her. In this class, I realized that we will have that kind of
students. For example, in different class when they discussed “were encouraged
to come to the USE?” one student replied, “I was forced to come here by my
manager”. So, when I saw how patiently teacher kept repeating to “I am here to
help you”, “I really want to help you, but I can’t because you are not doing assignments”.
For some reason, I didn’t think that I might have students who does not have
internal nor external motivation. Maybe, their parents forced them to come so
they have no interest in doing homework. I was wondering if I would be as patient
as teacher was in composition class. Also, how she handled this situation was
really interesting. She gave assignment for those who completed their homework,
and invited those who didn’t at the back of the room.
Then they worked on connecting two independent sentences. She
walked around to see if anybody needs some help. However, they didn’t have time
for “beautiful mistakes” session, as class was over. She was able to go over
almost everything on her agenda except quiz review. Out of three classes I observed,
two ended up running short on time.
Lesson learned:
1)
even with the planed lesson I should be
aware to cover the most important aspect of lesson at the beginning because I might
not have enough time at the end.
2)
Not all students will be eager to study, there
will be those who are not interested at all. It is important to keep balance
between those who really want to learn and try to help those without motivation
to keep up with lessons. However, it is so tempting to work only with those who
want and ignore those who doesn’t care :)
