During this tutoring session, I tutored Abdulla, a CIES student from Saudi.
Abdulla told me he needed my help to review two essays written during this CIES session. Both essays had been marked by his teacher, with comments in the margins. Abdulla explained that he was keen to practice his writing as he was still considered a group 2 student in writing, even though he was a group 3 student in most other areas.
Abdulla's first writing sample, a five paragraph essay about 'Study habits' contained introduction (with thesis), main body and conclusion paragraphs.
He highlighted the main arguments in his essay. He discussed ways students could ensure they retained more from class ex: being well rested, reviewing topics etc.
His teacher had commented that Abdulla needed to show more examples of 'making a clear connection of ideas' in each paragraph. She also noted that he needed to work on grouping ideas and trying not to introduce new ideas in the conclusion paragraph.
I was glad to recognize a pattern to some of his mistakes and told him that although they seemed like a lot of errors, they were really all just variations of the same mistake.
