Salah TS #8

Salah TS # 8 (Adult)

Date/Time:5/4/2015   16:30 - 17:30
Location: CIES basement lounge

For this session, I observed Helena tutoring a native Spanish-speaking CIES student.  The student needed help with elements of sentence structure, ex: noun clauses, direct object, subject etc.
Helena used her laptop during the session to look up the definition of noun clauses for example.  I learned that this can be a useful tool during tutoring sessions.
The tutee needed some help with pronunciation, so Helena asked her to read a short passage while she corrected pronunciation.  The passage also had vocabulary on the back which allowed her to review new words with her tutee.

Helena used creative ways of explaining new words.  For example: to explain grumpy, she showed a picture of the seven dwarfs.
I noticed the tutee used 'b' and 'v' sounds interchangeably.  I think this is common for Spanish speakers.

Helena also noticed her tutee had problems pronouncing words with 'ch' letters and instead said them as if it was a 'sh' sound.

I learned that different students struggle with different things ex: pronunciation although they might be quite good in other areas.
