Today was my first meeting with my conversation partner Abdul. Abdul told me he is from Saudi Arabia and that his wife is also a CIES student here. He was very pleasant and we talked about various subjects. He is working towards taking the TOFL test very soon.
Abdul is a mechanical engineer in his home country and would like to continue studying engineering here in the U.S. I asked how he was adjusting to the American culture and he told me it was very different here. He felt that people here are friendly but they are shy about making deep relationships. His favorite hobbies are reading, walking and traveling. He is looking forward to making more American friends and therefore, very eager to improve his speaking skills.
We also spoke about my family and I told him what things helped me to learn a new language.I explained, it was much easier to learn when I watched a lot of t.v. especially cartoons and listening to music. He agreed to try it out. Hopefully, next time we meet he will tell me if those suggestions helped any. I learned from Abdul that an open mind is really necessary to embrace new cultures and new experiences. I also appreciated that his inner determination is what is truly motivating him to continue pushing on to improve his English.
