My second classroom observation was an advanced speaking class taught by Ramin.
Students worked in groups to correct mistakes on a handout.
They also practiced warm up exercises on the 5 W's + How - usage. They are working on a presentation related to a topic they are passionate/interested in.
I listened in, as a Colombian student explained her presentation idea to a Kuwaiti student. She spoke about her passion - photographing food for restaurants and explained that she works in this field in Colombia. The Kuwaiti student explained his passion was fixing electronics and although he never went to school to study, his father taught him at home.
Students were able to communicated, but occasionally got some words or phrases wrong. This is the level of English I have encountered whenever I travel and stay in youth hostels. I think it is possible to get to know students more, as they are more comfortable communicating in English.
Ramin walked around and helped students, pointing out any areas they needed to work on. For example, one Spanish student often neglected to add the letter 's' at the end of words that need it. Also, Arab students tended to roll their 'r's more than was necessary.
