Today was my first tutoring session with the student from
China. We discussed tutoring plan for the upcoming weeks. Right now, she has conditional
admission to FSU, college of communication. She has to pass TOEFL requirements
to have full admission. So, she is going to take TOELF in April. We decided
that we would work on her weakest TOEFL sections - speaking and listening. We will
be working with actual TEOFL questions and simulate TOEFL IBT format as close
as possible. This should help her to get used to the timing of TOEFL speaking
section and be less nervous during actual test. Also, she said that students in
her major have to make lots of presentations and she would like to practice her
presentations skills if possible. So, we drafted a plan for the next weeks.
She asked to stop her and correct her grammar mistakes and pronunciations
whenever it possible. I agree. Then I remembered,
that it is better to work together with the student, so they learn to correct
their mistakes. Therefore, I offered to work on it together by recording her
answers and listening together.
