Today I met my child tutee
Nayun and her family. Her father speaks some English, but her mom speaks very
little. Nayun was shy at first, but she warmed up to me after showing her and
her father a short children’s video within a language learning app of mine. The
child’s mother brought several books for me to read with her. She said that she
was teaching Nayum how to read at home since she was in elementary school
teacher in Korea. The books were from basic beginners to advanced beginners
level readings. The ones that we read together were: “Who can I play with?”, “Dr. Seuss Cooking
with the Cat”, and a couple of pages of the book “The Little Mermaid” by
Disney.
I let Nayun choose her own reading material.
Each time she read something that was illustrated in the pictures, I would ask
her to point to it or make a simple question about it. Doing this allowed me to
determine if she understood what she read. I taught her how to pronounce
correctly certain words (e.g. human instead of humen, were instead of ware, etc.).
I praised her for doing so well with her reading and encouraged her family to continue
reading together. I learned that I will have to bring some pronunciation
activities next time.
Wanda, it looks like you had a great session! I think your teaching experience is very helpful as well. :)
