Matthew_ TS#4

This tutoring session involved teaching my child tutee how to correctly read and comprehend his testing material for the FSA reading test for 4th graders. I provided him with a sample test online that was more fun and interactive than a print copy of the test. When reading his passages, I would stop and probe him for questions like "What is the main idea of this paragraph?", "What do you think the author is trying to say here?", "What do you think will happen next?". This gets him to stop and think about what he is reading because often times he would like to speed read through the passages and then he can not answer the questions because he didn't give the passage his full attention. I also guided him in basic test taking skills and reminded him to always read all of the answer choices before selecting an answer. Matthew did a really great job and we ended the lesson with reading a short book and creating a summary. To reward his hard work, we played fun word games like "Boggle" and "Scrabble".
