I chose three students from A1 group. Only 2 of them replied
to me. Purpose of my first meetings was to find out more about student and his
goals for learning English and come up with the plan for the next lessons. I
agree for whatever time was convenient for them as I am free during spring
break. So, as Dr. Kim said some of them will not show up for the meetings. That
happened with me yesterday, two times. First my Tutee didn’t show up for the
lesson and right after I supposed to have Conversation partner session, who
didn’t reply my calls and messages. This happened despite the fact that I sent
them a message to confirm our appointment a day before, and they replied that
they will be there.
Good that I don’t really need a conversation partner, since I
am attending international conversation workshops. However, I wrote to tutee
that I am very busy and don’t want to waste by coming to the CIES just to find
out that he left. So, I wrote that I will take another tutee. I think it worked
out well. Because then he wrote that he is very sorry, and will show up for the
appointments.
This was good first time experience.
So, one of the initial three tutees from group A1, is
student from UAE, who is preparing for the IELTS certificate. He talked about
his experience at Tallahassee, what he does during the weekend, why he chose
FSU. He is planning to start his bachelor degree in West Virginia University.
When I asked why? He said because his friends are there. Then I asked why did
he come to FSU? He said that there are too many Arabic students in West
Virginia, which is not good for his English.
When I asked him, what he would like to focus on. He didn’t
have clear idea, and just said reading, speaking. He also said that he is
preparing for IELTS. I asked him if he wants to use IELTS reading preparation
he said sure. But when now I think if he is level A1 for listening, it will be
too difficult for him. Reflecting back to what we learnt in class, that it
should be +1 to the current level of the student. I will have another session
with the student from the same group tomorrow, and want to look over the
textbook. I hope, this will give me some guidance. Because right now, I have
vague understanding what will be appropriate teaching materials to use with
students with the level A1.
