Brian - IC CP #1
The first conversation partner workshop was a great experience. I had the opportunity to talk and discuss culture differences with some students from Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and China. We discussed dating rituals around the world, and I was most struck by the rituals in Saudia Arabia. The majority of dating and marriage goes through the mother, who searches and selects a woman for her son, instead of the son looking for himself. Their culture is more conservative than anything I have ever heard in the United States, outside of some small groups. It was an truly interesting experience and I look forward to seeing my new friends next week.

I am glad you got to learn about some of the dating rituals from around the world. Were you able to find out a rationale (why) they prefer this method of finding a partner? Trying to understand these underlying perspectives is key. Also, how do you think these more "conservative" values can affect teaching and learning?
