Topic/Skill: Introduction and feedback of his needs
Today I
met Hector Suni; he is from Peru. He lived in Puerto Rico for 6 years and got
his Master’s Degree in Mathematics from the University of Puerto Rico; which
was one of the universities I studied. I figured that he could read and write
English pretty much, since most of the textbooks and curriculum are in English
at that University and that most of his difficulties would be in listening and
speaking. I wasn’t wrong because when we met I couldn’t understand much of what
he was trying to say. He was having difficulty arranging and expressing
complete sentences, but finally I could figure out what he was trying to tell
me, it was that he couldn’t stay to long because he had another class shortly
and that he was available after 4:30 pm. I met with him again later in the day,
but this time even thou I spoke to him in English he spoke back to me in Spanish.
He repeated some of the words that I
said like “cliffs”, since it was the first time he hear them.
He spoke about his
country, work experience, educational experience in Puerto Rico and goals. I
ask him where he though he needed the most help in English and he said that he
could read and write good but conversational English was very difficult for him
and that he felt intimidated due to some people making fun of him when he spoke
it. I told him about my struggles in learning a second language and the trials I
had to endure but didn’t let anyone stop me from pursuing my goals nor much
less intimidate me. I praise him for his effort and told him that for the next tutoring
session I want him to speak only English. I will be helping him with his
vocabulary, sentence structure, expressions and pronunciation.
