I was very happy to participate in the Intercultural
Workshop. I was impressed to see the
large variety of International Students on campus. We all participated in a group activity that
allowed us to learn and exchange greetings in each other's language using
verbal and nonverbal methods. I was
paired with 3 Arabic speakers they were from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. I also worked with Alix from Burkina Faso,
she is a French speaker. I found it difficult
to pronounce the Arabic names and greetings.
I had to have them repeat it to me various times. The French greeting was easier. I found this exercise helpful. It taught me how difficult it is to struggle
learning a new language. This exercise
will help me as a future teacher to be show more patience, empathy and respect
for other cultures.
Kathy, I have a difficult time saying "Asalamalakum" as well. My CP partners were also from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and I was most fascinated by the fact that they can sometimes share a small "nose kiss". Culture differences are so fascinating to me!
ReplyDeleteGood reflections! Students appreciate you taking the time and effort to work on pronouncing their names, and greetings correctly. This can show respect towards a culture, and to the individual.
